We are a life-giving church that desires to reach Austinites and improve the quality of life in the city. Our vision is to see people telling stories of Jesus changing lives through them.
Originally from beautiful South Africa, The Kriel family is now based in Austin, Texas, where they are innovating and leading the 5twelve City Church plant downtown. Out of their passion for fun-loving communication and pursuit of His purposes, they serve 5twelve with love and commitment. The church’s mission is to reach the 90% unchurched urban core by reimagining church for the next generation.
The Board meets monthly (and as needed) to discuss the matters below to facilitate support, health, growth, and maturing of the 5twelve City Church congregation. The Lead Pastors hold positions on the Elder Board, with other church members (including staff members, ministry team leaders, and others) making up the remainder.
The Elder Board has oversight responsibility for:
+ Mission - Leadership & Vision
+ Message - Theological application, Preaching, Teaching, Statement of Faith
+ Maturing - Discipleship & Discipline
+ Ministry - Groups & Gatherings, Staff appointments
+ Money - Budget & Management
*The Finance Team is a sub-committee within the Elder Board, and it consists of the starred members above.
Our desire is that everyone in 5twelve will be in a group where they can be in relationship and held accountable as they grow together in God. This team will consider: our group structure, health of our leaders, raising new leaders, assimilating new people, what our groups are doing when they gather, how our groups can be missional in reaching those who feel far from God, and anything else that they feel important for group life to flourish. Caring for our church family often takes place through the Life Groups; however, in times of challenge, crisis and transition, there may be an even greater need to make sure people are well cared for. This team will consider our structure of care: mobilizing the pastors and other counsellors, meal trains, journeys with people in transition (e.g., premarital counseling, baptism preparation, elder care, etc.), partnering with specialized ministries, mobilizing the church to respond to practical needs, and whatever else this team feels is needed for 5twelve to be a place where our members’ needs are met.
A great amount of infrastructure is required for effective ministry in these times. When it works at its best no one is even aware of it, but when it doesn’t work, it can hinder or even prevent ministry. This team will consider the different technical aspects of Sunday services: setup, sound, video, media, and streaming. They manage designing and optimizing the systems, scheduling and training of volunteers, improving the quality of presentation, increasing our reach, and whatever else this team feels is necessary to create the infrastructure for ministry to be effective on Sundays.
For the 5twelve City Church family to grow, it is crucial that people in the community feel invited to attend 5wtelve and then feel welcomed and loved when they make their way to our Sunday services. This team will focus on creative ways to reach out to our community, inviting people to attend our service, welcoming people to the venue, catering for volunteers, set up of the non-technical aspects of our spaces, décor, communicating and facilitating moments like communion, coordinating hospitality volunteers, and anything else needed to make 5twelve an inviting environment for our members and visitors.
This team will work on mobilizing the people of 5twelve toward reaching people with the Gospel and serving the city’s practical needs through individual awareness, church initiatives, and partnering with other ministries in the city. May 5twelve be known as a church that serves in ways and in places with no expectation of gain for ourselves. For more information, visit our Outreach page!
May our expectation of God always exceed our expectation of ourselves or others. Nowhere is this expectation more evident than in the vibrancy of our prayer team. This team will meet to mobilize and facilitate prayer in the congregation, while also making time to serve in prayer, covering our congregation in prayer for the following: prayer requests, the direction of the church, our reach across the city, and the needs of our people and community. Because prayer is a conversation and not just an act of petitioning before God, the prayer team will convey what they sense God saying back to the congregation. May we be a House of Prayer. For more information, or to submit a prayer request, visit our Prayer Request page!
Kids are not only the church of tomorrow but part of the church today! Effective ministry to kids, as well as empowering their parents in raising them in the ways of God, are fundamental to us being a multigenerational church. This team will work on curriculum, scheduling of volunteers, 5twelve Kids moments on Sundays, creative ways to engage the kids in all we do, and whatever else they feel is needed for us to minister to our children. In any organization, communication is critical for smooth functioning and increased participation. In the church, communication isn’t just part of our functioning - it’s our mission. This team manages all forms of communication at 5twelve, from internal announcements (e.g., the newsletter), to the look and feel of presentation materials, to outreach efforts via the blog and social media.
The Messaging Team is made up of church members who have a passion for preaching and teaching. This team, along with the Staff and Elder Board, help with strategic planning of the church’s sermon series and overall messages. On occasion, they prepare sermons to be delivered by one or more of the members of the team, as well.
Worship happens when we value God above everything else. The creative arts are a powerful vehicle for expressing our love for God and emotional connection to Him. Our worship team serves to help our church members engage our hearts and minds in unity as we focus on God. Team members serve using their skill at instruments, vocals, or behind-the-scenes production. We examine each song for Scriptural truth and relevance to the morning message, and spend time together in prayer as well as rehearsal. Serving on the worship team is a joyful experience and a beautiful depiction of individuals using their gifts to come together with common purpose to exalt our God!
Our vision is to see people telling stories of Jesus changing lives through them. We’ve gathered those stories in hopes it reaches YOU!
